COMPARATIVE GALLERY: SATYRINAE - SATYRS, MORPHOS AND OWL BUTTERFLIES
Satyrs (Tribe Satyrini) are dull brown butterflies of forest undergrowth - they tend to shun sunlight. They are frequently abundant, but their dull colouration and small size makes identification difficult. Generally underwing patterns are more useful for identification purposes than upperwings. Satyrs are weak, fluttery fliers and there are an estimated 2000 species worldwide. Members of the Tribe Melanitini are large, atypical Satyrs. This subfamily now incorporates two further groups that were formerly given subfamilial status, the Morphini (ex-Morphinae) and Brassolini (ex-Brassolinae). Perhaps the most famous of all Neotropical butterflies are the Morphos (Tribe Morphini), huge, electric blue creatures with a characteristic lolloping flight. Owl Butterflies (Tribe Brassolini) are large and dramatic species. Butterflies in this group are somewhat crepuscular, and their cryptic underwing pattern and erratic flight style mean that they are often mistaken for moths.
