AQUATIC RAT Scapteromys aquaticus
A large, robust, long-tailed rat not dissimilar to Rattus in overall appearance. They have long, glossy pelage and are nocturnal in behaviour. They are semiquatic rats with considerable fossorial ability using the powerful claws and long toes for digging. Typically they occur in open, inundated habitats. A series of stiff hairs on the tail apparently assist it in swimming.
