CHOTOY SPINETAIL Schoeniophylax phryganophilus
If it wasn't for his long, bifurcate tail, the Chotoy Spinetail would be a “little brown job” and much easier to overlook. But look closely at him and you will see what a handsome bird he really is, with his rufous cap and shoulders, distinctive throat markings and stunning chestnut iris. He can be a secretive bird at times, but when he flushes his tail immediately identifies him, no other small brown bird has an adornment nearly as long. The Chotoy likes open grassy areas with scrubby vegetation, often near water, where his throaty “bouncing ball” call is one of the strangest, but most commonly heard sounds of the Paraguayan countryside.
