RUBY-CROWNED TANAGER Tachyphonus coronatus ATLANTIC FOREST
A flock of wholly black and wholly rufous birds dart across a humid forest track in front of you. It doesn´t leave you much to go on, but its enough to identify this Atlantic Forest Endemic tanager. Its English name isn´t the best, the ruby crown of the male is rarely visible, and in fact you are far more likely to notice his white underwing, though I suppose White-underwinged Tanager isn´t much of an improvement either! Family groups forage noisily through the undergrowth, keeping contact with continuous chat calls. In some areas they are one of the most numerous of humid forest birds.

Superficially this species is very similar to the White-lined Tanager Tachyphonus rufus but this is a bird of humid forest whilst that species is found only in dry areas.
