COLLARED PECCARY Pecari tajacu
Though pig-like, the Peccaries are not closely related to domestic pigs. They share the flattened snout and habit of rummaging around (rooting) in the ground, and were so similar in appearance to European Wild Boar that the Spanish settlers christened them "Jabalí" (the Spanish name for Wild Boar). Like all Peccary, the Collared (or Kure´i to the Guaraní) is a sociable species, though rather shy in behaviour.
