TETTIGONIIDAE: BUSH CRICKETS AND KATYDIDS
Eye-catching Orthopterans that are often large (up to 6cm) and are characterised by their greatly exaggerated antennae which may be several times longer than the body. Though many species are arboreal (hence the name "bush" crickets), a large number of species are found in grassy areas. At rest the wings are held over the body like the roof of a house. Tarsal formula is 4-4-4. The ovipositor of females is typically greatly elongated and often sabre-shaped. Tympana are present on the tibiae of the forelegs. Most species are vegetarian, a few are predatory.
