RUFOUS-CAPPED ANTSHRIKE Thamnophilus ruficapillus
You can imagine our surprise when this fellow dropped into one of our nets in the southern city of Encarnación! It was the first record of this species in Paraguay for many years! It is of course likely that the bird is overlooked in southern Paraguay, Antshrikes are notoriously difficult to observe, but it appears to be replaced further north by the Barred Antshrike - a bird with a very similar song!
