BOLIVIAN SLATY-ANTSHRIKE Thamnophilus sticturus
When you look at the photographs of this species you may be forgiven for thinking "Hey, that looks just like a male Variable Antshrike". And yes it does, but when you see the bird in life some very obvious differences become apparent. Firstly this species is found only in the northern Chaco where it lives alongside the white-bellied Chaco race of Variable. Note also that this species is shorter-tailed with less obvious white, and crucially, when it sings, it wags the tail up and down like a fan - something that no self-respecting Variable would ever dream of doing!
