BLUE-BLACK GRASSQUIT Volatinia jacarina
No patch of wet scrubby grassland is complete without the presence of the grassquit, a core member of mixed seed-eating flocks. Females are dull and easily overlooked, but males are striking and unmistakeable in their glossy blue-black dress. During the spring watch out for the territorial displays of the male, performing up and down flights from a prominent perch and showing off his white underwing, hoping to catch the eye of a broody female (see FPAVE3035VI).
